States, UTs and capitals of India: India is a vast country with rich history and culture. It is also a federal republic, meaning it is divided into states and federal territories. Each state and union territory has its own capital. The capital cities of India are the headquarters of the governments of the respective states and union territories. India is a union of 28 states and 8 union territories. States and union territories are subdivided into districts and smaller administrative units. The Constitution was adopted on 26 November 1949 and came into force on 26 January 1950. The boundaries of the Indian states were reorganized on a linguistic basis under the States Reorganization Act of 1950. 1956.

The Indian Constitution is federal in nature but unified in a manner that means Indian states do not have the right to secede from the union. Thus, India has both unitary features (like appointment of governor, concurrent list, single citizenship, single constitution) and federal features (Union List, Sub-State List).
