Every year on January 21, the Indian states of Tripura, Meghalaya and Manipur celebrate their founding day. This year’s State Foundation Day celebration has not yet chosen a theme. People of the Northeast celebrate the Foundation Day of Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya with much fervor and pomp. People participate in different activities to express their diverse cultures and traditions.
Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya Foundation Day 2023: History, significance and many things to know
History
The North Eastern Region (Reorganization) Act, 1971 allowed Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya to become full-fledged states on 21 January 1972. The Assam Plains of the former Assam Province, the Hill Districts and the Border Region The North East Frontier (NEFT) of the Northeast border constituted the Northeast region at the time of independence. Additionally, Manipur and Tripura, two states of India, were merged in 1949.
The states of Manipur and Tripura received the status of “Union Territory” in 1949. Nagaland was granted statehood on 1 December 1963. Thanks to the Assam Reorganization (Meghalaya) Act of 1969, Meghalaya became an independent state within the boundaries of Assam, in accordance with the sixth schedule of the Constitution of India. The North East Reorganization Act, 1972 gave Tripura and Meghalaya full statehood, with effect from 1972. Additionally, NEFA and Mizo Hills of Assam were converted into Union Territories.
The Mizo Accord of 1986 declared that Mizoram became a full-fledged state of India in 1987. Additionally, NEFA (Arunachal Pradesh) received full statehood in 1987.
