Siddaramaiah Biography: The Indian National Congress (INC) finally achieved some success in the recent elections after defeating Karnataka from the BJP. Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, this is a huge victory for the INC and the party is ensuring to keep its ship united, unlike last time when despite forming a coalition government, they forced had to resign due to internal conflicts.

For the post of new Chief Minister, INC has decided on Siddaramaiah, who completed his full term as the 22nd CM of Karnataka from 2013 to 2018. INC’s DK Shivakumar, who played a key role in former coalition government formation between INC and JD(S) will be Deputy Prime Minister. Who is Siddaramaiah? Early life and background

  • Siddaramaiah was born on 3 August 1947 in a remote village Siddaramanahundi in Mysore district of Karnataka.
  • He belongs to a farmer family, his parents are Siddarame Gowda and Boramma.
  • He did not go to formal school until the age of 10 but graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree and an LL.B degree from the University of Mysore.
  • Siddaramaiah is the second child of five siblings and belongs to the Kuruba Gowda community.

Siddaramaiah’s political career

  • Siddaramaiah became famous for his eloquence and excellent oratory skills during his college days.
  • He was working as a junior lawyer in Mysore when he was discovered by lawyer Nanjuda Swamy, who urged him to contest the election to Mysore taluka. Siddaramaiah obliged and was successful.
  • He then contested from Chamundeshwari constituency on a Bharatiya Lok Dal ticket and joined the 7th Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1983.
  • Siddaramaiah, who came from a humble background, surprised everyone with his victory and became a famous figure in the Mysore region of Karnataka.
  • He joined the Janata Party and became the first chairman of the Kannada Monitoring Committee, established to oversee the implementation of Kannada as an official language.
  • Siddaramaiah was re-elected in 1985 and took charge of the Ministry of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services.
  • His political career took off in the 1990s and he frequently switched from one party to another while dealing with multiple election defeats.
  • He headed the finance ministry in the Janata Dal government, held the post of General Secretary of the party and was appointed Deputy Prime Minister in 1996.
  • Siddaramaiah joined the Janata Dal (Secular) along with HD Deve Gowda but lost the 1999 state election. However, he was appointed Deputy Chief Minister under the INC and JD(S) coalition government in 2004 .
  • After disagreements with Deve Gowda, Siddaramaiah was expelled from the JD(S) and joined the Indian National Congress.
  • He contested the elections from Varuna Constituency in 2013 and became CM. He served a full term from 2013 to 2018.
