Odisha Day: History

Before that, present-day Odisha was the main part of ancient Kalinga. It witnessed the Kalinga War led by King Ashoka, who conquered the region in 260 BC. Later, the state was invaded and occupied by the Mughals until the British took over administration and divided it into small units in 1803.

Let us tell you that the western and northern districts became part of the state of Bengal while the coastal region was Bihar and Odisha (earlier Orissa). After three decades of revolution under eminent leadership, the state was separated from Bihar and became a separate province on April 1, 1936.

At that time the movement was more intense with the leadership of several leaders including Utkala Gouraba Madhusudan Das, Utkala mani Gopabandhu Das, Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati, Pandita Nilakantha Das, Fakir Mohan Senapati, Gangadhar Meher, Sir Basudeba Sudhaladeba, Radhanath Ray, Bhubanananda Das, AP Patro and many others with public support.

The newly formed Odisha (formerly Orissa) consisted of six districts namely Cuttack, Puri, Baleswar, Sambalpur, Koraput and Ganjam. The state capital is Cuttack. Sir John Hubbak was sworn in and he became the first Governor of Orissa province.

Odisha Day (Utkal Divas): Celebration

On this day, many types of fireworks are lit in the sky. Fireworks competitions take place regularly. Across the state various cultural programs are organized. Some indigenous songs are also sung in events organized by the Government of Odisha. But this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the celebration will be low-key.

About Odisha

According to the 1991 census, it has a total population of 31,512,070 (3.73% of India’s total population) of which approximately 16,237,000 are male and 15,275,070 are female. Earlier the capital was Cuttack and now it is Bhubaneswar. Odisha has 3 Divisions, 30 Districts, 58 Divisions, 317 Tahasils and 314 Blocks.

The state of Odisha is located on the east coast of India, on the Bay of Bengal. On 1 April 1936, the modern state of Odisha was established at Kanika Palace, Cuttack, which is a province in India and consists of Odia speaking people.

As discussed above, it is the ninth largest state in area in India and the eleventh largest in terms of population. The interior of the state is mountainous and sparsely populated. The highest point in the state is Deomali at an altitude of 1672 m. Odisha was hit by severe cyclones.

In October 1999, a severe tropical storm caused extensive damage and killed approximately 10,256 people. The state of Odisha is home to the Hirakud Dam, near Sambalpur, the world’s longest earthen dam.

It also has a number of famous tourist attractions. Let us tell you that Puri, Konark and Bhubaneshwar are known as the Golden Triangle of eastern India. Some of the sites located in Odisha that are important and have archaeological history include the Jagannath Temple of Puri, Konark Sun Temple, Lingaraj Temple, Udayagiri Caves and Khandagiri Dhaulagiri of Bhubaneshwar, Ashoka’s famous Stone Edict at Jaugada near Berhampur city and Barabati Fort of Cuttack etc

Let us take a look at the History of Odisha

If we read history then we will know that in world history, a major turning point took place in Odisha. The Kalinga War, Ashoka’s military campaign against Kalinga, was one of the bloodiest wars in Mauryan history. Ashoka was forced to issue two edicts calling for just and benevolent government in Kalinga.

Later, Ashoka was instrumental in spreading the teachings and philosophy of Buddhism throughout Asia. Southwestern Odisha is the Ativ Land that was not conquered by Ashoka. The civilization around the Tel River sheds light on the great civilization that lived in the Kalahandi, Balangir and Koraput (KBK) regions in the past. According to the wealth discovered in Tel valley, there were civilized, urbanized and cultured people living in this land about 2000 years ago and the capital was Asurgarh.

In fact, Kalahandi along with Koraput and Bastar is a part of Kantara as mentioned in Ramayana and Mahabharata. This area in the 4th century was called Indravana, the place where gems and precious stones were collected during the history of the Maurya empire. During the period of Ashoka, the Mauryan emperor, the Kalahandi region along with Koraput and Bastar was known as Atavi Land and the land remained unconquered according to Ashokan records. At the beginning of the Christian period, it was called Mahavana. Vyaghraraja in the 4th century AD was the ruler of Mahakantara which included Kalahandi, undivided Koraput and Bastar regions. The capital of Mahakantara is Asurgarh, Hatihumpha inscription of Emperor Kharvela, Udaygiri Konark Sun Temple built by the Eastern Ganga dynasty is one of the famous temples in India and a World Heritage Site.

Hence, Odisha is a state of archaeological importance and was created on 1 April 1936 as a separate and distinct province from Bihar.

Why is this day also called Utkal Diwas?

The establishment of the cultural and social organization Utkal Sammilani gave impetus to the independence movement in Odia. This organization was founded by Utkala Gouraba Madhusudan Das in 1903 to promote the establishment of Odisha as an independent state. To honor the great leader and his contribution, the foundation day is also known as Utkal Divas.
