Introducing Swami Vivekananda

“Arise! Awaken! and do not stop until the goal is achieved.” – Swami Vivekananda

“The greatest religion is living true to one’s own nature. Have faith in yourself.” – Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda’s pre-monastic name was Narendra Nath Dutta. He was born on January 12, 1863 in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) and died on July 4, 1902. His father’s name was Vishwanath Dutta and his mother’s name was Bhuvaneshwari Devi. He belongs to a well-off family. His father died suddenly at a young age and this broke his family’s financial breadwinner and pushed him into poverty. Even though he was a good student, he couldn’t find a job for a very long time. He used to apply for jobs from house to house but couldn’t get a job so he became an atheist. One of his English professors introduced him as ‘Shri Ramkrishna Paramhamsa’ and in 1881, he met Shri Ramakrishna Paramhamsa at the Kali temple of Dakshineshwar and became a disciple of Saint Ramakrishna Paramhamsa. He introduced the Indian philosophy of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. He was extremely patriotic towards India and was considered a hero for his contributions to his country’s philosophy. He also drew attention to the widespread poverty in India and for the country to develop, the issue of poverty needs to be taken seriously. He is best known for his speech at the Parliament of the World’s Religions in Chicago in 1893 when he began his speech by saying “Brothers and sisters of America…” and he introduced Introduction to Indian culture, its importance, Hinduism, etc

Therefore, Swami Vivekananda was a man of wisdom and faith, a true philosopher whose teachings not only motivated the youth but also paved the way for the country’s development. So that is why January 12 is celebrated every year as National Youth Day in India with joy and enthusiasm.
