History of National Girl Child Day 2023
National Girl Child Day was first initiated by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2008. Its main objective is to highlight the inequality faced by girls and raise awareness about the rights of girls and the importance of education, health and nutrition. Nowadays, sexism is also a major problem that girls and women face throughout their lives.

National Girl Child Day 2023: Rights of Girls in India
The Indian government has mentioned various schemes to improve the living conditions of the girl child. Some options are as follows:
- Gender determination at pregnancy clinics has been blocked by the government.
- Child marriage of girls is currently restricted.
- To save a little girl, the government launched a plan called “Save the little girl”.
- Free and compulsory education for both boys and girls up to age 14 has improved girls’ education.
- To combat malnutrition, high illiteracy, poverty and infant mortality in society, prenatal care is essential for all pregnant women.
- Many Laws are enacted by the Government like Anti-Sati and Anti-MTP to help women get jobs and status for Women.

- To give equal rights and opportunities to girls, the government has introduced a number of regulations aimed at a better future.
- The Government has made a Five Year Plan to look after the Educational Status of Backward States in India.
- ‘Blackboard Campaign’ has been created by the government for Girls, through which every teacher gets Higher Education to help students learn better.
- Even some Balwadi nurseries have been opened by the government to care for newborns and take them to visit primary schools.
- The government has established SHGs or Self-Help Groups to help provide better livelihood to rural girls.
- Open learning system has been set up to facilitate girl students of backward classes.

National Day of the Girl Child 2023: How is National Day of the Girl Child Celebrated?
Various events are organized across the country to celebrate girl child day to promote equal education, position, status etc in the society. In addition, the Indian Government also organizes a number of campaigns to raise people’s awareness about girls in Indian society. Through this campaign, the Government of India highlights inequality and issues related to the girl child. A number of advertisements were carried out by the government on television channels, local newspapers and radio stations with the message “Save the baby girl”. Even NGOs or non-governmental organizations join the celebration and create awareness in the society about equal treatment and education of girl child etc.
So far, the Indian government has not announced any theme for this year’s National Girl Child Day celebration. However, the theme of last year’s celebration was ‘Digital Generation, Our Generation, Our Time is Now- Our Rights, Our Future.’
On 24 January 2020, Madhya Pradesh celebrated National Girl Child Day with the theme “Awareness of childbearing potential of girls in Madhya Pradesh” under the Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao scheme. On this day, the state government also checks the health of girls and creates awareness about the rights of girls and boys. From January 24 to 30, the Department of Women and Child Development will also organize National Girl Child Week.
In 2019, the theme of National Girl Child Day is “Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow”.
Therefore, every child in the country, whether boy or girl, is important and is the future of the country. Girls should be treated equally and should be given every opportunity in our society for the good of the Nation as a whole.
