Today, skywatchers witnessed a hybrid solar eclipse in Australia and parts of Southeast Asia. The eclipse passes through the Indian and Pacific Oceans. This hybrid eclipse is named after the Australian coast ‘Ningaloo’. A solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Moon and Earth are completely or partially aligned. This phenomenon creates darkness on Earth and obscures the bright face of the Sun. NASA warns viewers that it is not safe to look directly at the Sun during much of the eclipse without specialized eye protection.

There are different types of solar eclipses such as total, annular, hybrid and partial solar eclipses.

– During a total solar eclipse, the Moon completely obscures the Sun. This allows skywatchers to see the star’s outer atmosphere.

– During an annular solar eclipse, the Moon is aligned with the Sun. However, this time it is farther from the Earth’s surface and does not completely cover the Sun’s surface.

– A hybrid solar eclipse changes from annular to total due to the curvature of our planet.

– During a partial solar eclipse, the Moon is not completely aligned with the Sun, only partially covering its bright surface.
