The new moon is the first phase of the lunar cycle. It occurs when the moon is between the sun and the Earth and its face towards the Earth does not receive light from the sun. The New Moon is often correlated with new beginnings, introspection, and potential.
A new moon is the opposite of a full moon. This means that this lunar phase is not visible from Earth.
According to National Geographic, new moons appear about every 29.5 days. This means that there are usually 12 new moons in a year. However, because the lunar cycle is not fully synchronized with the Gregorian calendar, some months may have two new moons.
When this happens, at least one of those New Moons is a Black Moon. National Geographic States: “Normally, a new moon occurs only once a month, but because there is a slight difference between the phases of the moon—the average cycle is 29.5 days—and the Gregorian calendar, some months may have two new moons: one at the beginning and one at the end.”
The new moon rises and sets at the same time as the sun. The new moon cannot be seen in the night sky and is often referred to as the “dark moon”.
New moons are named differently depending on the season. According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, “Historically, the names of Full Moons or New Moons were used to keep track of the seasons. Today, we consider the name Moon as a “nickname” for the Moon.
“The Moon names we use in the Old Farmer’s Almanac come from Native Americans, Colonial Americans, or other traditional North American sources passed down through generations.” it added.
