What is the Steel Sustainability Champion Program?
A company’s ability to continue operating must adhere to sustainability as a fundamental business requirement. For forward-thinking steel companies, adopting a philosophy of ethics and social responsibility can give them an edge over their competitors.
To push steel enterprises to further their efforts, create better standards and promote the industry, the World Steel Organization has established a sustainability recognition scheme. The project is a useful tool to demonstrate stronger industry commitment and proactive engagement in sustainable development.
The different Steelie Award categories are:
- Excellence in low carbon steel production
- Innovation of the year
- Excellence in sustainability
- Excellence in life cycle assessment
- Excellence in education and training
- Excellence in communication programs
A person must be shortlisted in one of the six categories of the International Steelie Awards or recognized by the Health and Safety Accreditation Program to qualify for the Steel Sustainability Championship.

What are the goals of the Steel Sustainability Program?
The Steel Sustainability Program recognizes the industry for achieving various sustainability goals. And the main goal is to reduce carbon emissions and help the Planet Mark Certification program become certified and maintained.
The main focus of the organization and programs is:
- A circular economy and carbon neutrality are promoted while emissions are effectively reduced.
- Raise awareness about ethical product supply chains and global mineral and product supply chains.
- Life cycle costing (LCC) method to assess the economic and social impact of products.
- Apply the 4Rs of Reduce, Reuse, Remanufacture and Recycle.
- Water can be recycled and reused, increasing efficiency while reducing demand and costs.
- The steel industry needs to acknowledge the relevance of emissions issues and their impact on the environment, human health and ambient air quality.
