Jamsetji Tata Biography: Early Life, Family, Education, Marriage
He was born on 3 March 1839 in Navsari, Gujarat, into a Parsi family. His father was Nusserwanji Tata and his mother was Jeevanbai Tata. He was the first child and only son of Nusserwanji Tata. Nusserwanji was the first member of the family to break the tradition of becoming a monk and try his hand at business. Jamsetji grew up in Navsari and came to Bombay with his father when he was 14 years old. He enrolled at Elphinstone College and passed in 1858 with the title of ‘green scholar’, equivalent to today’s graduate student. While still a student Jamsetji Tata married Hirabai Daboo.
After graduating, he joined his father’s export trading company and helped establish strong branches in Japan, China, Europe and the United States.

Jamsetji Tata: Career, Business and Vision
In 1868, at the age of 29, after accumulating experience of about 9 years working with his father, he founded a trading company with a capital of Rs 21,000 which later developed into the Tata Group.
In 1869, he took a bankrupt oil mill in Chinchpokli and converted it into a cotton mill and renamed it Alexandra Mill. Two years later, he sold the factory for a profit.
In 1874, he founded a new enterprise, the Central India Spinning, Weaving and Manufacturing Company, with an initial capital of Rs 1.5 lakh.
After three years, his business was ready to realize its destiny. On 1 January 1877, Queen Victoria was proclaimed Empress of India and Empress Mills was born in Nagpur. Jamsetji also embarked on his first exciting adventure at the age of 37.
His main vision was to establish an iron and steel company, a world-class learning institution to tutor Indians in science, and a hydroelectric power plant. None of this would come true while he was alive but he planted the seed.
His businesses were famous for efficiency, improving labor protection policies and introducing better fibers. He planned to build hydroelectric plants in the Bombay area and became the Tata Electric Company in 1906.
He began organizing India’s first large-scale ironworks in 1901 and six years later they were established as the Tata Iron and Steel Company (now Tata Steel). Tata Iron and Steel Company became the largest private steel manufacturer in India under the direction of Jamsetji Tata’s sons, Mr. Dorabji Jamsetji Tata and Mr. Ratanji Tata.
The core of the corporation not only produces textiles, steel, and hydroelectricity, but also produces chemicals, agricultural equipment, trucks, locomotives, and cement. Jamsetji’s other commercial projects include the Taj Mahal Palace, the first luxury hotel in India.
In 1892, he founded the JN Tata Foundation to encourage Indian students to pursue higher education.
He also donated land to a research institute in Bangalore (Bengaluru) in 1898 and his sons eventually established the Indian Institute of Science there. There is no doubt that the Tata family has become the most important private funder of technical education and scientific research in India.

He donated generously to education and health care. EdelGive Foundation and Hurun Research India honored him as the greatest philanthropist of the last century. He also topped the list of the world’s leading philanthropists of the 20th century.

On May 19, 1904, he died in Bad Nauheim. But to this day, he remains a source of motivation and inspiration for entrepreneurs around the world.
Jamsetji Tata: Legacy
Tata’s iron and steel plant was established at Sakchi village in Jharkhand. The village grew into a town and the railway station was named Tatanagar. Now, called Jamshedpur in Jharkhand in his honor. The ancient village of Sakchi is now urbanized and exists within the city of Jamshedpur.
