This year, the Indian Cricket Council (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) have introduced new rules for the cricket tournament. The impact player rule and DRS method are some of the new rules introduced into the tournament.

Let’s take a look at the new rules and format introduced for IPL 2023.

IPL 2023: Format and Venue

  • In the last three years, the IPL has been conducted in a lesser number of venues.
  • The 2022 edition was held in Mumbai and Pune, the 2021 edition started in select locations in India before moving to the UAE and IPL 2020 was conducted entirely in the UAE due to the COVID outbreak.
  • The most recent edition of the tournament is taking place across six different venues.
  • There are 10 teams participating in IPL 2023.
  • Each team will play 14 matches. There are a total of 74 matches in this IPL season.
  • Each team that wins a match will be awarded 2 points in the IPL Points Table. The losing team will not receive any points. If two or more teams have equal points, the ranking will be determined by the Net Run Rate (NRR) of each team.
  • After the group stage, there will be a 4-match playoff round. The playoff round consists of 4 matches:

Qualifying round 1: Competition between the two highest ranked teams from the group stage.

Qualifying round: Competed between the third and fourth ranked teams from the group stage.

Qualifying Round 2: Match between the losing team in Qualifying Round 1 and the winning team in Qualifying Round.

Final: Competed between the winners of Qualifying Round 1 and Qualifying Round 2.

IPL 2023: Impact Player Rules

  • The Impact Player Rule is the latest addition to IPL 2023. While this rule is nothing new in the world of cricket, this is the first time it has been introduced in the IPL.
  • The impact player rule allows each team to designate up to five substitute players from outside their playing lineup after the toss. During the game, one of these players is called an Impact Player, who can replace a member of the playing XI if it benefits the team’s performance in the match.
  • The rule allows teams to make substitutions during a match to improve the situation and playing conditions of the match.
  • Furthermore, the new rule allows teams to choose their playing lineup after the toss, which eliminates the toss’s influence on the team’s selection.

IPL 2023: New DRS Method

In IPL 2023, players will have the option to challenge the umpire’s wide and no-ball decisions through the use of the Decision Review System (DRS). The introduction of this regulation in the men’s league follows its successful implementation in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in 2023.

IPL 2023: No player board for toss

  • There has been a change in protocol to the team sheet in IPL matches, as the captain no longer has to hand over the team sheet when tossing the match. Instead, teams have the option of negating the impact of the toss by selecting their XI and five replacement players based on the result of the toss.
  • Furthermore, one of these five substitutes can be designated as a supporting player during the match. This new rule allows teams to strategize better and be more flexible with their team composition during a match.

Despite the new rules and additions to the game, IPL 2023 will be one of the most thrilling sporting events of the year. It will be spectacular to see top cricketers from around the world compete against each other to win the championship.
