All three species of black-and-white striped zebra are members of the equidae family. From Ethiopia south to the Cape of Good Hope, they can be found on the grassy highlands of Africa.
International Zebra Day 2023: History
Zebras are mainly found on the African continent, in semi-desert areas in Kenya and Ethiopia, as well as mountainous areas in Namibia, Angola and South Africa. Currently, three types of zebras can be found in the wild: Grévy’s zebra, plains zebra and mountain zebra. Grevy’s zebra is considered endangered on the Red List of Threatened Species. According to the African Wildlife Foundation, their population has decreased by about 54% over the past three decades.
International Zebra Day was most likely established by a consortium of conservation organizations such as the Smithsonian National Zoo and the Institute for Conservation Biology. International Zebra Day aims to help raise awareness about the living conditions of zebras and how to protect their numbers from further decline.
Along with the dangers of poaching, these zebras are also at risk from locals who may hunt them for meat when life gets tough. Zebras have struggled with many concerns about preserving their populations.

- Zebra stripes are so distinctive that no two zebras are alike in design.
- While white stripes reflect light and keep zebras cool as they stand grazing in the hot African sun all day, black stripes absorb heat from the sun and warm them in the morning.
- Zebras can communicate with each other by making different facial expressions as well as by moving and waving their ears.
- Zebras have no specific food preferences and consume a variety of grasses found in Africa.
