This year marks the 54th anniversary of the Apollo 11 lunar mission. Why is International Moon Day celebrated?
According to the official website, “The Moon Village Association submitted an application during the 64th Session of UN-COPUOS to declare the International Moon Day on July 20, commemorating the first human landing. in 1969, from the United States, with the Apollo 11 mission. The Declaration was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 9 December 2021.”

About the Apollo 11 mission
The Apollo 11 mission was NASA’s historic spaceflight that made the first manned moon landing. Launched on July 16, 1969, it carried astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, and Michael Collins. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong and Aldrin landed on the lunar surface in the “Eagle” Lunar Module.
