Popular photo-sharing app Instagram announced the Reels feature in 2021, and since then, it’s become a popular app for all ages. At their core, Stories are short 30-second videos that allow users to share their creativity, product reviews, funny moments, or anything else that comes to mind.
Stories have become so popular that Instagram has introduced many new features to Stories, such as the ability to remix other users’ Stories and the ability to create new stories from live video.
As Stories continued to grow, Instagram decided to allow users to download them. This means people can now save their Favorite Stories on their devices and watch them online or share them with others. The announcement was made on June 21, 2023 by Instagram Director, Adam Mosseri.

How to download Instagram Reels?
This feature is currently available to Instagram users in the US and only works for Stories posted on public accounts. If the account is private, Stories posted on that account cannot be downloaded.
Users with public accounts can disable the ability to download Stories in their settings. This means that even if a reel is posted on a public account, the user who posted it can prevent others from downloading it.
Also be aware that this feature only works on mobile phones. So users using Instagram on the web or the desktop app won’t be able to access it.
The announcement was made by Adam Mosseeri, Instagram Director. He made this announcement on his Instagram broadcast channel “IG Updates”.
The notice states, “In the US, we’re rolling out the ability to download Stories shared by public accounts to your photo library. Just tap the Share icon on your favorite reel and select Download.”
“It’s worth mentioning that Stories shared by private accounts can’t be downloaded, and public accounts can turn off the ability for people to download their Stories in Account Settings,” it added.
To download reel, here are the steps you need to follow:
- Update the Instagram app to the latest version.
- Open your favorite movie reel
- Click the “Share” button.
- A new “Download” option will be available on the bottom tab.
- Click the “Download” button.
- The film will be downloaded to the photo library.

The downloaded reel will have the account name of the user who posted it as a watermark. This is similar to how TikTok and YouTube handle downloaded videos. The watermark will include the account name and Instagram logo.
In a nutshell, the option to download Stories is a new and valuable feature that allows users to save and share their favorite Stories more easily. It’s also important to know the rules for downloading Stories and to respect the rights of their creators.
