What is the story behind Holika Dahan?

There are several stories about Holi, but the most famous one is about Hiranyakashipu and Prahlada. He was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. He is the son of the demon Hiranyakashipu. He was born and raised under the guidance of sage Narada. That was when Hiranyakashipu was busy pleasing Lord Brahma to attain immortality.

Hiranyakashipu was an enemy of Lord Vishnu and strongly opposed Prahlada being a devotee of Lord Vishnu. Prahlada refused to obey Hiranyakashipu, and he then asked his sister Holika, a female demon, to kill Prahlada. She has a divine shawl given to her by Lord Brahma to protect her from fire. To kill Prahlada, Holika planned. She lured Prahlada to the fire, but by the grace of Lord Vishnu, the divine shawl protected Prahlada instead of Holika.

It is believed that during the fire, Prahlada started chanting the name of Lord Vishnu. A wind blew, blowing Holika’s scarf away. The female demon Holika was burned to ashes in a huge fire. By the grace of Lord Vishnu and the divine shawl, Prahlada was unhurt.

Then Lord Vishnu appeared on Earth to kill Hiranyakashipu in the form of Lord Narasimha to protect Prahlada. This is the reason the Holi festival is named after the legend of Holika. So the Holi bonfire is called Holika Dahan.
