What is Kokborok language?
The mother tongue of Tripura is Kokborok, also known as Tripuri, and has been spoken by the local Tripuri people for many years. One of the classical languages of Northeast India, it. The people are called Borok and the language is Kok. Tiprakok/Tripurikok was the previous name of Kokborok. In northeastern India, in the state of Tripura and the nearby CHT hills of Bangladesh, Kokborok (Tripuri), a Tibeto-Burman language, is one of the major indigenous languages.
One of the Tibeto-Burman languages in the region with the fastest growth and development is Kokborok. Tripuri tribes such as Debbarma, Kalai, Reang, Jamatia, Tripura, Noatia, Rupini, Murasing and Uchoi are the main speakers of the language. Kokborok language is spoken by the Tripuri community. People who speak Kokborok are collectively called “Tripuris”.
Some facts about the Kokborok language
- Kokborok is a Tibeto-Burman language widely spoken in northeastern India and the neighboring Chittagong hills of Bangladesh.
- Kokborok was formerly known as Tipra, its name was changed after the 20th century.
- This language is mainly spoken by the Debbarma, Kalai, Reang, Jamatia, Tripura, Rupini, Uchoi and Murasing peoples.
- Radhamohan Thakur was the first person to write Kokborok. He wrote Kokborok’s Grammar called “kokborokma” published in 1900.

Kokborok Day will be celebrated for the 45th time on January 19, 2023. The language of Tripura, Kokborok, is also known as Tripuri or Tiprakok. The government of the state of Tripura, India, designated Kokborok as an official language in 1979, along with Bengali and English. And to commemorate this special occasion, this day is celebrated every year as Kokborok Language Day.

To celebrate the development of the Kokborok language, the Indian state of Tripura organizes a festival known as Kokborok Day (also known as Tripuri Language Day). In Tripura, Kokborok is the only recognized language. This day was chosen to honor the original 1979 designation as the official language.
Kokborok Language Day 2023: Meaning
In the Annals of the Kings of Tripura it is stated that “Koloma” is the script of Kokborok. There were 184 Tripura kings who ruled Tripura for more than two thousand years. The script is currently being revived. Due to many socio-political discussions, Kokborok’s writing is not yet perfected but many people prefer to write it in “Latin script”.
Kokborok Day 2023: Celebration
Through “Mission Kokborok tei Hukumu”, many government and non-governmental organizations work tirelessly to develop Kokborok language, art, literature, film and music. The fact that Kokborok language is now taught in government schools, colleges and universities is a great achievement for the people of Tripura. This language is still being researched to further develop and popularize it.
The Kokborok language is currently taught in public schools, colleges and universities as part of an initiative to promote it. Since 2015, Khumulwng town has even established a Kokborok book library with more than 5000 books on the Kokborok language and topics related to it.
