History of Gujarat

Gujarat, the Land of Legends, is a state in northwest India. ‘Gujara’, Gujjars’ homeland, is where the state gets its name. They ruled the region in the 700s and 800s. Gujarat has long been famous throughout the world. Indus Valley civilization and Stone Age settlements along the Sabarmati and Mahi rivers also date to roughly the same time, and Harappan sites have also been discovered at Lothal, Rampur, Amri and other other state locations.

It borders Pakistan and Rajasthan to the northeast, Madhya Pradesh to the east, Maharashtra to the south and the Union territories of Diu, Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli to the northeast. The state borders the Arabian Sea to the west and southwest.

Before India gained independence, what is now Gujarat was divided into British and princely territories. Gujarat joined the largest bilingual Bombay State after the reorganization of the states, which included the erstwhile British, the Union of Saurashtra States and the Union Territory of Kachchh. On May 1, 1960, the present state of Gujarat was established. It is located on the west coast of India.
