The FIH Men’s Hockey World Championship is the flagship event of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) and is held every four years. The 15th edition of the tournament, FIH Hockey World Cup 2023, is scheduled to take place in India from January 13 to 29, 2023.
The tournament was first held in 1971 in Barcelona, Spain and since then it has been held in many different countries around the world. Pakistan is the most successful team in the tournament’s history, winning it four times (1971, 1978, 1982 and 1994).
The 2023 edition of the tournament will feature 16 teams, with host nation India automatically qualifying for the tournament. Teams will be divided into four groups of four teams each.
The top team in each group will advance to the quarter-finals, while the second-place team must compete in cross-match matches.
The tournament will begin with the opening ceremony and match between Argentina and South Africa on 13 January 2023. The final of the tournament will take place on 29 January 2023. Matches will be held on the two venues are Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneshwar and Birsa Munda Stadium in Rourkela. Pakistan, the most successful team in the Men’s Hockey World Cup, will not participate in this year’s tournament.
