The tournament format has expanded significantly, accommodating 48 teams instead of the previous 32. With teams divided into 12 groups of 4 countries, the battle for the throne promises to be more intense than ever.

The eight third-placed teams from each group as well as the top two teams from each group will advance to the round of 32. A total of eight matches will be played from the group stage to the final, instead of seven.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup will no longer have the traditional format of 32 teams competing in the tournament. In the next edition, a total of 42 teams will compete to win the coveted trophy, 16 more teams than in the previous seven editions.

The geographical division of the continental unions was determined:

AFC (Asia): 8 direct entry slots + 1 inter-confederation play-off slot.

CAF (Africa): 9 direct entry spots + 1 inter-confederation play-off spot.

Concacaf (North and Central America, plus the Caribbean): Six direct entries + two inter-confederation play-off spots.

CONMEBOL (South America): Six direct entries + one inter-confederation play-off spot.

OFC (Oceania): One direct entry + one federation play-off spot UEFA (Europe): 16 direct entries.

The three host countries will automatically qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, thus taking up three of the Concacaf spots.
