Fastest Trains in India 2023

Indian Railways does not currently have any high-speed rail lines in operation, but they have proposed twelve routes, and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is currently under development. The Gatimaan Express is one of the fastest trains in India with operational speeds reaching 160 km/h (99 mph) in certain sections, while the Vande Bharat Express holds the record for the fastest top design speed of 180 km/h (110 mph).

The Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor, which is being built using Shinkansen technology and standard gauge, will have a maximum operating speed of 320 km/h, making it the first high-speed rail line in India. This line is expected to reduce travel time between the two cities to around three hours and ticket prices are expected to be comparable to air travel. However, due to land acquisition challenges in Maharashtra and the COVID-19 pandemic, the project’s completion date has been pushed back to October 2028 from the original target of December 2023. A segment of the line between Surat and Bilimora is set to open by 2026.
