Equality Day India 2023: Equality Day India is celebrated on April 14 every year. The day marks the birth anniversary of the ‘Architect of the Indian Constitution’, Dr. BR Ambedkar. And this year we celebrate his 132nd birthday. No less than a festival, all groups and communities celebrate this day in all states and union territories of the country.
Why is April 14 celebrated as Equality Day in India?
On April 14, Ambedkar Jayanti or Bhim Jayanti is celebrated in the memory of Indian politician and social reformer BR Ambedkar. As per Parliament’s Rule 110, Chief Minister MK Stalin said in 2022 that Tamil Nadu will observe April 14 as “Samathuva Naal” or “Equality Day” in honor of BR Ambedkar.
This choice was made to honor Babasaheb’s efforts to end discrimination based on caste and religion. To bring about change in Indian society, Bharat Ratna Ambedkar proposed to introduce a Uniform Civil Code. He emphasized equality in religion, gender and caste.
In addition, he participated in all three roundtable conferences in London. His proposal for a separate electorate for the untouchables was rejected by Gandhiji, leading to the Poona Pact in 1932.

Dr BR Ambedkar and his remarkable contributions
Dr. Ambedkar was a great freedom fighter who realized the lack of doctrine in the Dalit Movement and gave the movement the necessary support. He raised awareness about living a life of kindness among the oppressed classes.
- Ambedkar advocated the creation of a separate electoral system for untouchables and other outcast groups in his testimony before the Southborough Committee in 1919 as part of the preparations for the Government of India Act .
- Shahaji II, Maharaja of Kolhapur, helped Ambedkar establish the newspaper “Mooknayaka” (leader of Silent) in 1920.
- He founded the “Bahishkrit Hitkarini Sabha” (Outcasts Welfare Association) in 1923.
- By 1927, Ambedkar had begun organized campaigns for Dalit rights, calling for public water supply for all and the right of all castes to attend temples.
- Ambedkar signed the Poona Pact in 1932.
- In 1930, he spoke on behalf of the untouchables at the Round Table Conference. Harijan secured a seat in the election due to his tireless work and perseverance.

Dr. Ambedkar spent his life leading a crusade against the evils of the caste system in an effort to abolish caste. As a Dalit, he made every effort to change the hierarchical structure of Indian society, restore equality and justice to the less fortunate, and end untouchability. He argued for a society built on three core values of freedom, equality and fraternity. On the occasion of his birth anniversary, we should pledge to continue following his path to uplift the country.
