Delhi-Mumbai Expressway: India’s longest highway, all you need to know

The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 12. Specifically, the 246 km long Delhi-Dausa-Lalsot section was inaugurated by government officials.

The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is a landmark project in India’s infrastructure development and will significantly cut travel time from Delhi to Jaipur.

According to the Prime Minister, the expressway is aimed at benefiting Sariska National Park, Keoladeo National Park, Ranthambore National Park as well as cities like Jaipur and Ajmer. He added that the fact is that Rajasthan is already famous for its tourist attraction and this prestigious project will enhance it even further.

Other leaders present on stage during the event were Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Union MoS VK Singh and Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. Several addressed the program through video link, including Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot and his Haryana counterpart Manohar Lal Khattar.

Delhi-Mumbai Expressway: Key Features

  • The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will be the longest expressway in India. It will stretch up to 1,386 km.
  • Travel time will be significantly shortened from 24 hours to 12 hours. It will cut travel distance by 12%.
  • The highway will pass through six states. Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Maharashtra will be among them.
  • It will also connect major cities like Kota, Indore, Jaipur, Bhopal, Vadodara and Surat.
  • The expressway will also manage 93 Gati Shakti Economic Nodes, 13 ports, 8 major airports and 8 multimodal logistics parks (MMLPs).
  • Upcoming new airports like Jewar, Navi Mumbai and JNPT port will also be a part of this route.
  • This is a $13 billion (£10.8 billion) project.

Delhi-Mumbai Expressway: Role of Prime Minister

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of the country’s longest highway.

The expressway connecting the capital with Mumbai opened its 246 km first leg on Sunday, February 12, 2023.

He pressed the remote control button to mark the foundation laying/inauguration ceremony of a total of 4 projects.

The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway is worth over Rs 18,000 crore.

He said it was a “sign of India’s development”, adding that “such investments in railways, highways, metro lines and airports are key to promoting accelerate the country’s growth, attract more investment and create new jobs.”

Not only that, Mr. Modi’s government also announced an unprecedented 33% increase in infrastructure spending.

Mr. Modi is expected to open more major rail, highway, expressway and port projects in the next few months.

Indian Railways and Infrastructure

  • Delhi and Mumbai make a concerted infrastructure effort to catch up with geopolitical rival China.
  • India has one of the world’s largest rail networks, employing 1.3 million people although the country needs to catch up more due to time demands.
  • This is India’s first high-speed railway, a Japanese-funded project worth $13 billion.
