The official announcement of National Counter-Terrorism Day came after the assassination of India’s seventh Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi on May 21, 1991. He was killed in Tamil Nadu in an operation by a terrorist. . Later, under the VP Singh government, the center decided to observe May 21 as Anti-Terrorism Day. On this day, anti-terrorism pledges are made in all government offices, public sector agencies and other public institutions, etc.

Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi went to Sriperumbudur, a place in Tamil Nadu to attend a rally. A woman came before him, a member of the Liberation of Tamil Tigers (LTTE), a terrorist group. She stuffed explosives under her clothes and approached PM and bent down as if to touch his feet. Suddenly a bomb explosion occurred, killing the Prime Minister and about 25 people. It was domestic terrorism that caused fear and our country lost its Prime Minister.
