Ed Simons Background
Ed Simons, born June 9, 1970, had a unique upbringing. He was the son of a lawyer mother and had a father whom he described as “absent.” Despite these circumstances, Ed excelled academically and attended an expensive state school where he gained 11 O levels and three A levels. His educational path eventually took him to the University of Manchester, where he gained a degree in history, with a particular focus in late medieval history.
Tom Rowlands musical journey
Tom Rowlands, born 11 January 1971, grew up in Henley-on-Thames with a passion for music. His musical journey began even before he crossed paths with Ed Simons. Tom met Ed at Manchester University in 1989, where they discovered a shared interest in the emerging rave and club culture. His fascination with the music scene, and in particular the famous Fac 51 Hacienda nightclub in Manchester, played a key role in his budding partnership.
Before teaming up with Ed, Tom Rowlands had been involved in a band called Ariel. Together with his friends Brendan Melck and Mathew Berry, they embarked on a musical journey. Their initial single, “Sea of Beats”, was released as a white label. They later formed the band Ariel in London and released songs such as “Must’t Grumble” and “Rollercoaster.”
The birth of the chemical brothers
In 1989, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons began DJing together at a club called Naked Under Leather in the back of a pub. This marked the beginning of their musical collaboration, operating under the alias “237 Turbo Nutters”, a reference to their home number and their shared experiences in rave culture. Their journey eventually led them to create their own music. Using a Hitachi hi-fi system, an Atari ST, a sampler and a keyboard, they recorded a track titled “Song to the Siren”, which included a sample from This Mortal Coil. This marked the birth of “Diamond Records”, his own record label, named after Ed’s nickname.
The Chemical Brothers, as they would later be known, faced initial challenges when London dance record stores refused to play their first song, “Song to the Siren”, considering it too slow. However, he caught the attention of London DJ Andrew Weatherall, who defended him at his DJ sets. This exposure led to the official release of “Song to the Siren” in May 1993.
