Family, Early life and career
- Daughter of politician Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto
was the leader of Pakistan from 1971 to 1977.
- The leader graduated from Harvard University (B.A., 1973).
- She studied philosophy, political science and economics at Oxford University (BA, 1976).
- She then completed a master’s degree in international law here (MA, 1977).
- Later, after completing her studies in 1977, she returned to Pakistan, where her father was deposed by General Mohammad Zia-ul-Haq. (who later appointed himself administrator of martial law)
- In 1979 after her father’s execution, Bhutto became the official head of her father’s party, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
- She was frequently under house arrest from 1979 to 1984.
- From 1984 to 1986 she lived in exile, returning to Pakistan after the lifting of martial law.
- She became a leading figure in the political opposition to Zia.
- In 1988, when President Zia died in August in a mysterious plane crash, Bhutto’s PPP party won the largest bloc of seats in the National Assembly.
Benazir Bhutto: Assassination
- Benazir Bhutto later served two terms as Prime Minister of Pakistan until she was exiled by military dictator Pervez Musharraf in the late 1990s.
- In 2006, after his dictatorship ended, she returned to Pakistan and merged with the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy.
- During negotiations between the military regime and other politicians, Bhutto proceeded to organize rallies in her support across Pakistan.
- One of these protests was interrupted by a suicide bomber on October 19, 2009, who killed 139 of her supporters.
- Bhutto survived the attack and she was attacked again at a rally on 27 December 2007.
- While Bhutto was standing through the car’s sunroof waving to supporters, three shots rang out and was followed by an explosion.
- Bhutto died on the way to the hospital.
Bhutto is a symbol of democracy as she spent her youth rebelling against the military dictatorship in her country and was martyred.
