Atal Bihari Vajpayee Biography: This year marks the 5th Anniversary of the death of former Prime Minister of India and awardee Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He served as the 10th Prime Minister of India for the first time for a 13-day term in 1996. His second Prime Minister’s term was for 13 months from 1998 to 1999. He held the position of Prime Minister for a full term from 1999 to 2004.

Vajpayee passed away in 2018, aged 93. President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and other officials laid flowers in memory of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee on August 16 2022 on his fourth anniversary at the memorial to Vajpayee called ‘Sadaiv Atal’ in Delhi.

Who is Atal Bihari Vajpayee?

Veteran Indian politician Atal Bihari Vajpayee is the 10th Prime Minister of India. Vajpayee’s term as Prime Minister consisted of three non-consecutive terms – the first term lasted 15 days (from 16 May 1996 to 1 June 1996), the second term lasted 13 months (from 19 March 1998 to April 26, 1999), and a third term of five years (from October 13, 1999 to May 22, 2004). He is the first Prime Minister since Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru served as Prime Minister for two consecutive terms.

Vajpayee is a veteran MP who has been elected 9 times to the Lok Sabha and 2 times to the Rajya Sabha. He played a key role in India’s post-independence domestic and foreign policy. During his student days, he joined the Movement to Get Out of India in 1942. As a student of political science, Vajpayee developed an interest in foreign affairs, which was reflected in his skill. He represented India at various bilateral and multilateral forums.

Early life

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born on December 25, 1924 into a Hindu Brahmin family to Krishna Devi and Krishna Bihari Vajpayee (mother and father). Vajpayee’s father is a teacher. Vajpayee completed her studies at Saraswati Shishu Mandir in Gwalior. In 1934, he joined the English-Native High School (AVM) in Barnagar, Ujjain District. He then attended Victoria College (now Maharani Laxmi Bai Govt. College of Excellence) in Gwalior for a Bachelor’s degree in Hindi, English and Sanskrit. He completed his graduate program with a Master of Science in Political Science from DAV College, Kanpur.

Party Career & Politics

As a student, Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a member of the Escape from India Movement in 1942. Then joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in 1939 as a volunteer. In 1942, he became an active member of RSS. Vajpayee and his brother were also arrested for 24 days during the Escape from India Movement. In 1951, Vajpayee was selected by RSS to work for the then newly formed Hindu Bharatiya Jana Sangh Hindu political party. He was appointed as the party’s national secretary.

In the 1957 Indian general election, Vajpayee ran for the Lok Sabha. It should be noted that then-Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was impressed by Vajpayee’s oratory skills. In 1968, Vajpayee became the national president of Bharatiya Jana Sangh following the death of Deendayal Upadhyaya.

In the 1977 General Election, a coalition of parties including Bharatiya Jana Sangh formed the Janata Party and this party won the general election. At that time Vajpayee held the position of Foreign Minister. As foreign minister, Vajpayee was also the first person from India to speak in 1977 before the United Nations General Assembly in Hindi. In 1980, Bharatiya Jana Sangh jointly founded the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) with Vajpayee as its first president.
