The Committee of Defense Ministers established the first National Flag Day Fund in 1949. The Indian Ministry of Defense merged the related welfare funds into a single Armed Forces Flag Day fund in 1993. The whole country celebrated the first Armed Forces Flag Day on December 7, 1949 to commemorate the soldiers who sacrificed their lives to protect the integrity and safety of the Fatherland. Since that time, India has celebrated Armed Forces Flag Day every year.

The purpose of this day which is considered national flag day or national armed forces day is to distribute flags to the public and collect money from them for the development of the armed forces. In 1993, the Indian Ministry of Defense merged all related welfare funds into a single Armed Forces Flag Day Fund. These funds include:

  • Gorkha Welfare Veterans Foundation of India,
  • St. Council Fund Dunstan’s (India) and Kendriya Sainik
  • Consolidated special fund for bereaved, war disabled and other veterans/service personnel
  • National Flag Day Fund

The local units of the Kendriya Sainik Board (KSB), a unit under the Ministry of Defense, are responsible for managing fund collection across the country. Through volunteer organizations, collections are organized in both formal and informal ways.

What is the significance of Armed Forces Flag Day?

The Indian Army, Indian Air Force and Indian Navy all organize various shows, festivals, plays and other entertainment programs on Flag Day to highlight to the public the efforts of their personnel them in ensuring national security. In exchange for donations, small flags and car flags representing the three Services will be distributed nationwide in the colors red, dark blue and light blue.

Three basic causes are highlighted on Flag Day:

  • Rehabilitation of war victims
  • Serving the welfare of employees and their families
  • Welfare and resettlement of veterans and their families
