Kargil Vijay Diwas: What is the History of the Kargil War?

8 facts about Kargil Vijay Diwas

1. The Kargil War took place in the Kargil District of Jammu and Kashmir, along the Line of Control (LoC). The Pakistani army sent its soldiers in the name of winter intruders to take over the area. Their main objective is to cut ties between Ladakh and Kashmir and create tension on the Indian border. Let us tell you that the intruders were at the top at the time while the Indians were at the bottom of the mountain so they were easy to attack. In the end, war broke out between the two sides. Pakistani soldiers crossed the Line of Control as LOC and entered the Indian controlled area.

Did you know that Kargil was part of the Baltistan district of Ladakh before the partition of India in 1947 and was split by the LOC after the First Kashmir War (1947-1948)?

2. On May 3, 1999, Pakistan started this war by infiltrating the highlands of Kargil with about 5000 soldiers and capturing it. When the Government of India received information about it, ‘Operation Vijay’ was launched by the Indian army to repel the invaders who had cunningly occupied the Indian Territory.

Let us tell you that in 1971, before the Kargil War, India and Pakistan fought a war which led to the formation of a separate country i.e. Bangladesh.

3. Do you know the scenario before the Kargil War? In the winter of 1998-1999, the Pakistani Army secretly began training and sending troops near Kargil to dominate the region with the goal of capturing the Siachen Glacier. Furthermore, the Pakistani Army claims that they are not Pakistani soldiers but Mujahideen. In fact, Pakistan wants international attention to the dispute so that it can pressure the Indian army to withdraw from the Siachen Glacier and force India to negotiate over the Kashmir dispute.

4. The story behind the war: After the Indo-Pak war in 1971, there were many military conflicts. Both countries conducted nuclear tests in 1998, further escalating tensions. To defuse the situation in February 1999, the two countries signed the Lahore Declaration, which promised to provide a peaceful and bilateral solution to the Kashmir conflict.

5. Infiltration of Pakistan Armed Forces and Paramilitary Forces through the Line of Control into the Indian side is codenamed “Operation Badr.” Did you know that its main objective is to break the link between Kashmir and Ladakh and withdraw the Indian Army from the Siachen Glacier? At the same time, Pakistan believes that creating any kind of tension in this region will help turn the Kashmir issue into an international problem, leading to a speedy resolution.

The Kargil War was a war fought between two nuclear nations.

6. The IAF uses MiG-2I, MiG-23, MiG-27, Jaguar and Mirage-2000 aircraft for ground attack. Primarily, for air interception with a secondary role of ground attack, the MiG-21 was built. To attack ground targets, the MiG-23 and 27 were optimized. Several Pakistani targets were attacked. Thus, the IAF’s MiG-21s and Mirage 2000s were widely used in Operation Safed Sagar during this war.

7. A large number of missiles and bombs were used in this war. About twenty thousand and fifty thousand shells, bombs and rockets were fired. About 5,000 shells, mortar bombs and rockets were fired daily from 300 guns, mortars and MBRLs while 9,000 rounds were fired on the day Tiger Hill was recovered. It is said that this was the only war after the Second World War where a large amount of bombardment was carried out on enemy troops. In the end, India won a decisive victory.

8. The conflict took place in rough terrain and at extremely high altitudes; some stations are more than 18,000 feet high, making this possibly the toughest conflict in recent memory.

But as it is always said to our Indian soldiers, “HARD TIMES DON’T LONG, GREAT MAN.”
